The working
01The job

A brand platform for Smurfit Westrock at the Ryder Cup. Built on what is already true about the brand. Built to feel like a fit.

What follows is the working. Each step earns the next. By the end, the platform is the only conclusion left standing.

02Operating principle

Invent nothing.
Translate everything.

A platform that introduces a new brand idea is doing brand work, and that work is already done. A platform that translates the existing brand into the language of the sport is doing partnership work.

Every element here is already true of Smurfit Westrock. The platform puts it next to a golf ball.

The world’s largest paper-based packaging company, headquartered in Dublin and listed in New York and London. The scale is the headline. The structure is the platform.

Smurfit Westrock makes the corrugated boxes, cartons, bags, labels and displays that carry commerce across 40 countries, from its own forests, recycling operations and mills to the finished pack. It is an integrated business: it grows, recovers and remakes the fibre it uses.

04Purpose

Smurfit Westrock’s stated purpose is three verbs.

Create.Protect.Care.

To engineer. To contain. To steward.

Now read the same three verbs as the job description of a Ryder Cup captain. They do not change.

The shared values
Safety

“We value safety and life above all.”

Loyalty

“We value our mutual commitment.”

Integrity

“We value doing the right thing, always.”

Respect

“We value and respect everyone.”

Four values. One of them, loyalty, is the entire emotional economy of a team event.

05The brand lines

Smurfit Westrock speaks with two voices. Both are worth earning.

Corporate brand line
“Creating the future together.”
Sustainability programme
“Better Planet Packaging.”

The corporate line frames the company. The sustainability line frames the commercial story a sponsorship gets to extend: Better Planet Packaging is the programme through which Smurfit Westrock redesigns packs, materials and supply chains with its customers, drawing on insight from more than 160,000 supply chains.

The smart line builds directly on the second.

06The framework

The sustainability strategy reports against three pillars.

Planet

Circular materials, lower carbon, less water. In the company’s own words, the circular economy has long been the core of the business.

People & Communities

An engaged, safe and inclusive workforce, and a commitment that extends to every community the company operates in.

Impactful Business

Innovation and packaging design that help customers replace less sustainable materials and cut their carbon footprint.

A platform that maps to all three pillars is a platform the whole company can report against. The constraint is a gift.

07The commitments

By 2030, Smurfit Westrock is publicly committed to:

-28%
Scope 1 and 2 emissions, from a 2019 baseline
-22%
Water intake at mills
-24%
Waste sent to landfill
$40m+
Social, environmental and community investment
Delivered in 2025
Net zeroFour box plants in France reached net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
WaterA $30 million wastewater pre-treatment and recycling upgrade at the Solvay mill, New York.
ForestsChain of custody standards strengthened with the Forest Stewardship Council.
CommunityA biodiversity contest with WWF reaching thousands of schoolchildren in Colombia.

Already on the public record. Already board-approved. The measures of success at Adare Manor already exist.

“We look for the business case in everything we do, and sustainability is no different. … I believe that sustainable business is good business.”

08An industry truth
95%

of goods consumed in North America are packaged and shipped in corrugated. Around nine in ten of those boxes are recovered and made into new ones.

You never noticed. That is the point.

Close-up of a corrugated board edge showing the flute between two liners
Liner, flute, liner.

The corrugated flute is a few millimetres of paper folded into arches, the oldest load-bearing idea in engineering, glued between two flat liners. It carries the weight of world trade and asks for no credit.

Packaging is the discipline of being invisible until the moment it matters. So is a Ryder Cup pairing, a captain’s pick, and the infrastructure of a week that runs without a hitch.

09Now, the Ryder Cup

The most architectural contest in golf.

Years, in 2027

Stars become a team. Rivalry becomes ritual. Tradition becomes form. The whole package of golf, compressed into three days.

Holders

Europe, after a 15 to 13 win at Bethpage Black in September 2025, the first away win since 2012.

The captains

Luke Donald leads Europe for a third consecutive match. Jim Furyk leads the United States for a second time.

Home soil

The first Ryder Cup in Ireland since 2006, set to be the biggest sporting event ever staged on the island.

10The structure beneath

The Ryder Cup is the whole package of golf. Smurfit Westrock is the whole package of packaging.

Both became the whole package the same way: an Irish-European heritage bonded to an American institution.

Same transatlantic geometry. Same architecture of two halves bonded into one greater whole. The Ryder Cup contains golf. Smurfit Westrock contains commerce.

The mirror is not a metaphor. Tony Smurfit puts around 85% of the company’s business between Europe and the United States, and the partnership announcement describes a customer base “mirroring the unique transatlantic nature of the Ryder Cup.”

Every match in the Cup is played between Smurfit Westrock’s two home markets. Sponsorship usually borrows an audience. This one already owns it.

11The insight

Greatness, in any field, is always the whole package.

The greatest athletes are called the whole package. So are the greatest teams. So are the greatest contests. And the same phrase happens to describe what Smurfit Westrock literally makes.

Language gives the truth away: greatness is never one thing. It is everything, considered as one.

The Ryder Cup trophy
12The shared value

So the shared value writes itself.

The Whole
Package.

WHOLE

Every part considered. Existing verb: Create.

PACKAGE

Bonded into one greater whole. Existing verbs: Protect. Care.

Two words that describe what packaging makes, what teams become, and what champions are called. The same answer to “why is Smurfit Westrock here?” and “why is the Ryder Cup here?”

13The smart line

The existing line, intact. Then earned by the sport.

Existing line
Better Planet Packaging.
Smart line
Better Planet.
Bigger Game.

The smart line keeps the half the company already invests in, Better Planet, and adds the half the sport supplies, Bigger Game. Two words of equity, two words of event.

One line that works on a hoarding at Adare Manor, a box in Atlanta, and a slide in the boardroom.

Smart statement

Smurfit Westrock and the Ryder Cup share an architecture and a description: each is the whole package of its field. As Worldwide Partner and Official Packaging Innovation Partner, Smurfit Westrock brings the same completeness to the contest that it brings to commerce.

14The three themes

Each theme is a re-expression of one of Smurfit Westrock’s existing pillars.

Impactful Business

Innovation, packaging design, customer outcomes.

Every Part Considered

Engineering in every detail. Every flute, every fibre, every fold.

People & Communities

Workforce, safety, community investment.

More Than the Sum

Bonded layers. Team chemistry. The greater whole.

Planet

Circular materials, lower carbon, less water.

Circular by Nature

Sustainability designed in, not bolted on.

Each Ryder Cup theme maps to an internal reporting line. Each activation inherits a board-approved metric. The platform is bonded to structure the company already has.

Theme one · from Impactful Business
Every Part Considered

Engineering in every detail. Every flute, every fibre, every fold. The kind of completeness golf’s best players know by heart.

Engineered Throughout

57 mills and more than 500 converting and other facilities across 40 countries, integrated from forest and recycling to the finished box. Every fluted board uses geometry, not mass, to carry its load.

Architecture in the DNA

Jefferson Smurfit Group bought Straffan House in 1988 and opened The K Club in 1991 on courses designed by Arnold Palmer. The company was title partner of the European Open there from 1995 to 2007 and, under Dr Michael Smurfit, brought the Ryder Cup to Ireland in 2006. Smurfit has been engineering the structures behind the game for four decades.

Precision by Design

Better Planet Packaging draws on insight from more than 160,000 supply chains to reinvent materials, redesign packs and take waste out of logistics. Every redesign is a measured decision.

Theme two · from People & Communities
More Than the Sum

Strength comes from the bond between parts. Liner, flute, liner. Twelve players, one team. Two heritages, one company.

Bonded by FibreStronger TogetherA Layered Roster

Rome, 2023.
Bonded by Fibre

A corrugated box takes its strength from the bond between its layers, not from any single sheet. Three days, twelve players, one performance: the same principle.

Stronger Together

In July 2024 Smurfit Kappa and WestRock combined as Smurfit Westrock: 97,000 people, 40 countries, $31.2bn in sales. A transatlantic structure that mirrors the contest itself.

A Layered Roster

Alongside Capgemini, DP World, Rolex, SAP and Stripe, golf’s greatest team contest is held together by a structure of partners. Most of what those partners sell, ship and hand to a fan arrives in a box.

Pull one sheet from the stack and it bends. Bond three and it carries a household. The Ryder Cup is the only week in golf where the bond is the point.

The Innovation Partnership

As Official Packaging Innovation Partner, Smurfit Westrock helps the Cup’s partners and suppliers bring best-in-class sustainable packaging to the event, in service of one ambition: the most sustainable Ryder Cup ever staged. Adare Manor 2027, Hazeltine 2029, Camiral 2031.

Better Planet Targets

By 2030: 28% lower Scope 1 and 2 emissions, 22% less water at mills, 24% less waste to landfill, more than $40 million invested in communities. The Cup arrives in Ireland with the scorecard already printed.

Designed to Leave Less

Renewable, recyclable, biodegradable. Around nine in ten corrugated boxes are recovered and remade. Adare Manor has planted 16,000 native trees since 2016 and ran the JP McManus Pro-Am to ISO 20121, the standard for sustainable events. The fibres return to the earth long after the trophy is lifted.
